KYLAND by MIA SHERIDAN ~ Review

KYLAND
MIA SHERIDAN
Released January 24th

SYNOPSIS

Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.

Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken, coal mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life, keeps her going.

Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly—through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds—to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.

They're both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?

Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately, a story of deep and unending love.

REVIEW

Kyland is a standalone beautiful love story about two selfless people that choose to overcome rather than to be victims. Mia Sheridan creates the most amazing characters that touch my heart in ways I never thought possible. I am at a loss for words to convey the beauty within this story.

The love story between Kyland and Tenleigh is filled with heartbreak. I mean real life changing heartbreak!  They have lost loved ones and live in hopeless poverty YET they have pride and determination.
”Sometimes my life felt so small. And I had to wonder why those of us who were given small lives still had to feel pain so big. It hardly seemed fair.”
Their small ray of sunshine is the Tyton Coal Scholarship award to only one winner each year. After years of hard work Kyland and Tenleigh are both in the running for this scholarship.

It is during their senior year that Kyland and Tenleigh become friends. Kyland fights to keep her at arms length and yet finds priceless ways to communicate with her. They argue oh do they argue but they eventually form a bond that you know is only going to end in heartbreak.
"You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope."
Immediately after the scholarship winner is announced the couple falls painfully apart. I cried the ugliest of tears!!! I knew it was coming and yet it still took my breathe away.
"Someday, when I'm living my dreams, I'm going to think of all the things that broke my heart and I'm going to be thankful for them."
At this point the story jumps four years into the future. From this point on Mia Sheridan delivers some terrific twists! I loved how the characters matured and the Epilogue was all I needed to patch the hole in my heart.

Being a girl with small town roots in Kentucky I loved how Mia completely captured the essence of community. If you are looking for a stunning read that will STEAL your heart - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND KYLAND!!!
